Frequent Low Level Microwave Exposure to the Brain.
Microwaves are a specific band in the Radio Frequency spectrum. Microwave ovens
heat food with higher frequency microwaves than those used to transmit cell phones
but the frequency is very close in some cases. The power levels in a micrwave oven
are much higher hence all the shielding that these "ovens" have. In fact if you compare
a microwave oven from the 80s or early 90s to one today the first thing you'll notice is
that the old ones were MUCH heavier! These ovens were much higher powered than those sold
today and thus needed even more shielding.
Microwave radiation is non-ionizing radiation which is the type of radiation with lower
frequencies than visible light. The higher frequencies above that of visible light are
called ionizing-radiation. These include Alpha, Beta, and Gamma radiation. Ionizing radiation
is widely accepted as harmful even at low power levels and shown to cause mutations in cell
growth. Microwave radiation, such as the waves emitted from cell tower masts, as
well as many other communication transmitters such as radio station repeaters and sattelite
systems, is known to "cook" living tissue when power levels are high enough. Standards are
thus set to limit exposure to technicians who repair such technology. The controversy
begins only when discussing low power transmitters such as cell phones which have been in public use for less
than 20 years. It appears that there was never any pre-consumer testing for the safety of this technology! Is low level exposure
bad for your health?? Nature, which is a respected British biology journal published a paper
study which showed a non-thermal response from microwave radiation in Nematode worms
which are considered a marker species. (more info)
They suggested in 2000, three years prior to this writing, that new exposure guidelines
should be considered for cell phones due to this "non-thermal" effect which they saw!
Why has nothing changed? That is a great question and one which George Carlo
addresses quite well in his coAuthored book called Cell Phones: Invisible Hazard of the
Wireless Age. Humans and all animals are electro-magnetic and electro-chemical in nature.
Some researchers believe that because our bodies operate on such low power electro-magnetic
impulses that we are thus significantly affected by signals of this magnitude.
Signals that are in the same power level range as our bodies use
for neuro-chemical impulses appear to have significant affect due to this similarity.
Unfortunately this just barely scratches the surface. While cell phones don't necessarily
"cook" your brain as an oven "cooks" this doesn't seem to be necessary to be hazardous.

Headaches from Cell Phones?
In a Commentary on p. 101 of Environmental Health Perspectives Volume 106, Number 3, March 1998,
Frey contends that headaches associated with the use of hand-held cellular phones could be real.
The frequencies, modulations, and incident energies used in earlier
studies of microwave energy research and headaches are approximately
the same as those now used in cellular phones. Low intensity microwave
energy affects the blood-brain barrier and dopamine-opiates in the brain,
and both systems are believed to be involved in headaches. (source)
